Sunday NIGHTtime May 21st PART D

photo: Naufus in MARIACHI HISTRIONICS

Part D: My Reading

Naufus's performances are action-based
endurance art often employing
altered consciousness aquired by
effort-work and no sleep. His work addresses
class, race, gender, power by examining and
working with his personal history.

At first, each of Naufus's actions
in his performance seemed chosen
in direct opposition to his estranged father.
Naufus -- young, gay & overweight
sings slightly off-key.
His dad -- older, macho & moustached
is a professional Mariachi musician.

Watching Naufus perform with his lexicon
of white eggs, white milk, & white condoms,
I feel him actively navigating
the Race ! Gender! Power! choices
both he and his father have made
and have had made for them.
They appear opposite and yet Naufus's aktions begin to blur
and bend creating options for the dialectic.
The vibrant orange cowboy boots look like high-heels.
He gathers the eggs falling out of his jockey shorts
and his knees come together a la Marilyn.
He morphs into a slightly transgendered
both pretty and handsome
and he becomes the sexy man/woman.
His second song, literally fuelled
by hot chile peppers, reclaims passion and tears
from the corny Mariachi repretoire.
There is a return to home but not as the prodigal son.
More a son becoming a tolerant and open one.

The performance was shorter than I had expected.
I would have gladly and happily seen this performance
at three or four times the length.

Love,
La Dragu

Now that is saying something - so rare the occasion that we say would like to see more - after so many times of hearing ' NEEDS EDITING'.

This is the beauty of Naufus' work - conceptually, he does so much editing that by the time the work is realized, it is distilled - to be savoured. There is never enough time.

Hi,

Well, this is day two and a half for me here, and so far, I've been having a
lovely time, although I am feeling a bit restless. There's alot of nervous
energy in me, but truthfully, not alot that I need to do in preparation of
our performance on Saturday. Preparation for me looks (and occasionally
feels) alot like doing nothing. But I assure you that I am working and
strategizing, even as I sit around on the Latitude deck, soaking up sun, or
wandering around the city. Tanis and I arrived from Regina on Friday
afternoon, and today, Anna and Felipe, the other members of our collective
arrive, so then we can really get down to business.

Not that I mind having time to hang out--quite the opposite. So far I've
gone to one screeing (Margaret's rather affecting Rent Do fairy tale),
bought a fabulous denim romper, reaquainted myself with Edmonton (the river
[valley]), checked out the exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Alberta, got lost,
relocated myself, spent much time on the big sunny Latitude deck (such a
good deck!) watched some bad hotel television, and attended Naufus Figueroa's
excellent and extremely visceral performance, Mariachi Histrionics.

Margaret Dragu gives great backrubs. I'm going to cut Sarada's hair later
this week. Tanis and Naufus and I are hopefully going to check out some yarn
stores so we can knit and crochet together. Zoe seems pretty keen on
barbequing, so we'll be well fed and happy. Everyone here is really
friendly and accommodating, and I'm really happy to be part of this.

…Looking forward to the week ahead.

I liked shopping for yarn with the members of ONO. After performing Mariachi Histrionics on Sunday, I worried what I would do with the rest of the week. But a couple of balls of yarn and an 14 inch purple hook later, I have filled my days nicely. Thrift shopping, shoe shopping on Whyte Ave... Malls and more malls, dinners, and wonderful relational performances. All has been nice... Except for Monday night when the Wolf that claims paternity to performance howled out of control and sneered at us... But as in Julia Kristeva's novel, The Oldman and the Wolves, Septicius Clarus might see "us" as wolves as well...
